New to Goetia, A few important questions. please help.

I've been reading the golden dawn and basic qabalah books for a while now, and recently i started looking at Crowley's LEsser key of solomon. I have a few questions regarding the nature of the conjurations. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

1. I've heard alot of people talk about setting ceremonial dates, as to call forth the entities in their proper "house" or degree of zodiac. I am confused as to whether these are specific days, or Zodiac signs attributed to the demon's element. If the demon I wish to evoke is of air, is any time within the zodiac of Aquarius, Libra, Gemini? etc. If not, how do I find the specific day?

2. I know for the most part evoking is external and crowley talks about physical incarnations of these demons, but I've heard some people say the images are just symbolic of their nature. Yet I have I also heard people talking about SEEING these demons, having EXTERNAL conversations with them. I believe magick is subconcious affecting at will, so are these things REALLY incarnating physically? Have you ever SEEN one, not with your third eye, but personally felt the breath of the demon?

3. What is the difference between the 72 demons and the 2nd goetia book containing the Aerial spirits?

Has anyone felt or done serious work on perhaps a connection between the vodou spirits and the goetia spirits?

Anyone notice anything worth considering?

I am new to both, so I am just curious.

I know Ifa is similar in some ways to I Ching, more of an oral African tradition of divination.

found me one of these nice little pendents at a yard sale. Thing was oooooold. So old I can't seem to get the dirt off. No matter how much I get it to shine, the dirt just keeps coming off. Hmmm. I don't know much about the symbol beside the basics but it was love at first site (My precious) on the opposite side, there is a triange with a pentagram in the middle and the name of the 3 archangels on each side of the triangle. Maybe someone can help me...as it seems whenever I take this item out on the town I get the impression that it's creating chaos around me but keeping me safe at the same time. I know it holds power. I'm just not sure what kind. Any info would be much appreciated.

someone coming around....

lately an entity has been emerging into my life. a very unique one in experience and feeling. I would like some guidance on it, and I am not sure if "he" may be a goetia but I thought of the term in my experiences...

He appears sometimes from a distance watching me with his head cocked. Handsome but his head is either a mask or if is his head which is a white bird mask that is similar to a crow/raven. His eyes are black. The beak is long and large. He is wearing a long robe that is tangerine orange. He kind of has this sexy venetian appeal. ;) I get this impression that he is observing me, and waiting for me to basically initiate him. He is not pushy or flashy. Just standing with this heir of confidence, and mystery.

Who is this? What archetype. I am curious.....

Greetings all~

While I am not a practitioner of Crowlean magick, I have a strong interest in it and all of its contents. I am curious about the purpose and reasoning behind invoking and working with the goetia. With my understanding, they seem like dark spirits or demons as they have been called, and I wonder why someone would want to invoke such energy? What are your experiences with them and what were the reasons for working with those entities? Could anyone give specific examples of their experiences? Through reading some posts here and doing research, it appears that if you call upon some of them, they can cause hauntings and misfortunes to those who invoke them. This leads me to continue to wonder what purpose they have for invocation. I love learning about all things magickal, for I am a pagan scholar and love learning about all different kinds of magickal practices. I have no judgments, just a strong sense of curiosity and learning.

Forget everything you know and enter into this world of something amazing. Magick is something that has to be approached from a fresh page in your life. Everything you have been fed all your life needs to be erased and you need to start again with the mind of a child. Like Suzuki Roshi says in his book Zen Mind Beginner’s Mind, “In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities, in the experts mind there are few.” Jesus was also was also quoted as saying that in order to know God you must become as a child again. The more you try to study & understand Magick with your intellect you will fail in your attempts to gain mastery. There are many excellent books on the subject available to the general public but in many ways these are a hindrance and not a help. You can read and study all you like but getting the true essence of Magick is a real art form. In the olden days Magick was passed through word of mouth & by example.

You will read information about invoking spirits & using them to achieve certain ends. I will tell you that you must build a relationship with an entity before it will listen to you. Most of the books you read would have you believe you can just turn to a certain page call something out & achieve results. I have never known anyone to be successful in this way. I recommend you find a spirit you feel a drawn too. Something will spark when you read about the right spirit. I can think of various spirits I have researched & cared about who in turn have given me the attention I sought from them. The first rule you must learn is that no matter what a book tells you it is your own personal experience with an entity that is important. It is like meeting a new friend. You may hear rumors that tell you so and so did this or that or was a poor father or something of that nature but you really have to judge a person based upon your experience with them and treat all rumors as not always being accurate. You may read about a certain angel or demon and someone may give you their account of their experience with that spirit. They may tell you to never invoke this spirit on a Wednesday or something like that. If you feel drawn to invoke them on a Wednesday then go ahead. The rules made in stone are meant to be broken. There are no hard fast rules in spirit invocations. Planetary alignments certain days of the week etc. may help you to concentrate your efforts to a certain end but really it makes no difference what matters is yourself. Building your relationship with a spirit is what matters everything else is just extra. For example say your leafing through The Goetia (which I do not recommend for beginners) and you come across the spirit named Furfur. Something about the name attracts you but you are not sure what it is. You read the short amount of information in the book and for some reason throughout your day your mind continues to go back to that name. You think you want to invoke him but your not sure why. You may even meet someone new who reminds you of the qualities of that spirit. You decide that you need the kind of assistance you think this spirit can offer you. The first thing to do is write the name down several times a day. Start to bring your attention to being introduced to that spirit. Feel the presence and continue to open yourself to experiencing seeing this entity. You may begin to feel the hair at the back of your neck stand on end or you may see out of the corner of your eye a shadow lurking. These are all good signs that you are beginning to draw that spirit to you. Start to make requests of the spirit and watch to see what happens. Try lighting candles and saying things to this spirit under your breath. The point is to build a relationship slowly and with a good intention. Just because a spirit is immaterial does not mean you shouldn’t treat it as you would a Great Teacher. Spirits are just like human beings and if your invoking a spirit that has been called upon a great number of times throughout history you should be well aware that they have certain likes & dislikes just like any other person would. They have personalities and that is the key to knowing them. Offer them your loyalty & friendship. If you treat them with respect it is a given that you should pretty much expect the same in return. Expect to get to know a spirits personality. Certain days you will have a clear psychic connection and other days you may feel nothing at all. It’s like trying to call someone on the phone sometimes they are there and sometimes you have to leave a message and hope they will get back to you. If you feel nothing from a spirit speak out loud something they may be enticed to come to you. You can also kind of think of them as you would a pet. The kinder you are to them the more they will do what you say but just like a pet if they are abused sometimes they will still end up doing what you tell them to. If you mistreat a dog and keep it on a choke chain it is likely that the dog will do what you command it to but it won’t like you and may end up turning on you when it gets the chance to. Depending on who or what your contacting you may have to show it toughness. Think of joining a gang or something like that some spirits will test you. Don’t think that it’s beyond a spirit to drive you insane. I have learned something from such experiences. If you’re going to go off the deep end your going to. Sometimes accomplishing your will is freeing yourself from all your preconceived ideas of who or what you are. It is not unusual for a would-be magician to go through a period of insanity and even being institutionalized. I am just trying to be as honest as I can about it. If you’re going to delve into Magick you’re going to let go of your ego. This is a world of seeing & interacting with things most people don’t believe in or think of as being real. Not everyone is going to have the skill to let go. If you’re told something isn’t true your entire life then suddenly someone like me is telling you to believe it might not work. You may also think these things are your imagination and there is no reality to them. Again you must be able to let go and let God as they say.

I recommend learning the sigils of the spirits you want to contact. A sigil is a Magickal language of the spirit. It allows them to see you’re serious about contacting them. Concentrate on the shapes and patterns contained within a sigil. Try and understand the nature of the spirit by the lines, which are really its true name. If you have read any Fairy Tales you will know that having the true name of a spirit is the key to holding power over it. Think of Rumplestilskin. Knowing someone’s name gives you a better idea of how to communicate with that person. If someone’s name is George you don’t mistakenly call them Susie, if you do they may not be too happy to talk to you. So with the sigils it is important to get them right and know every line, curve and shape. I am an artist so I like to imagine what the spirit looks like in my mind and draw pictures along with the sigil of the spirit I’m trying to contact. The more personal you make it the better your results are going to be. Everyone likes their ego stoked and spirits are notorious for this. The more you call & contact a friend the better relationship your going to have with that persons and spirits are no different. It’s important to treat them like friends if not you could upset them. Upsetting something you can’t see that can enter into your consciousness and your surroundings is not recommended. Think of having someone visit you who you really don’t want around. This has happened to me so I know. This is the part where you start going insane. Not fun. I’m not telling you that contacting spirits is a bad idea & can lead to insanity I am just warning you careful what you wish for you just might get it. If your easily spooked I wouldn’t recommend you start summoning spirits from the ether. Those that are easily upset can have difficulties when they start seeing & hearing things that shouldn’t by logic be there.

The Conjurations..

Another thing I have in question is the Conjurations as decribed in the book. I mean they seem all too Jewish to me. Also they tend to put all this focus on "God" as being something really grand & great & something these spirits need to bow down too. I find it a little disturbing. Maybe I'm more of a rebelious spirit myself & don't agree with binding spirits by the all mighty powers of "God". I am not Jewish nor do I believe in their "God" so why should I be telling a spirit to submit to the powers of this deity when I have no faith in him myself?! I believe in the powers of the Goatia & believe these are ancient dieties that pre-date the Jewish Faith. Any suggestions about another type ritual??

evocation in a dream

I have had multiple experiences of dreaming since getting into various types of ceremonial magick, where I will become lucid, and BAM, a goetic spirit that I had been researching to evoke lately appears, w/o me inviting or thinking it into my lucid dream... for instance, Zepar, came into my 'dreamspace' (that I was completely willfully commanding), and appeared coming out of the palms of my hands as two snakes made of smoke (very thick about 1 foot in diameter smoke) and entwined everyone in the room.. I woke up gasping and felt like someone had stepped into my bedroom when I was sleeping.

The next day I woke up and went to the 'room' in my dream (which was my favorite bar at the time) and sat down on a couch to enjoy a New Castle, and within 5 minutes, the room was exactly as I had dreamt (sans smokey snake appearing Zepar), same people, placed in the same places (EXACTLY) as I had dreamt the night before.

Kind of freaky.

I think Zepar was just showing off or something. Or maybe trying to intimidate me (i thought it was cool though, so if that was Zepar's tactic, it backfired), or maybe I just had a precognitive dream again. I'm not sure.

But that is not the only time that a Goetic spirit has appeared in one of my lucid dreams before.

Anyone else have any of the goetic spirits appear in dreams and cause something in your real life to occur?

The Goatia & my experience with it..(warning this thing is REALLY longgg..)

I have been facinated by The Goatia ever since I was reading about Aleister Crowley's dealings with it & how Allen Bennett MacGregor said to him, "Little brother, you have been meddling with the Goatia!" & how Crowley denied it & how MacGregor said, "in that case the Goatia has been meddling with you." Very interesting because that to me is really the way the book works, you don't choose to use it, it chooses to use you. So yes I was drawn into the web that is the Goatia. I bought my first copy at one of those Occult type shops in Hollywood. I just started reading it & getting very entranced by it's hypnotic power. I was experimenting with speed at the time & the two just seemed to work hand in hand. I started calling upon certain of the entities within getting some very interesting results. But here is one that was expreamly interesting. I was homeless just having been kicked out of the salon/clothing store I was working at & living in the back of the store. I was wondering around & found this huge pile of clothes outside somewhere in Hollywood & I was kind of cold so I was thinking to use some of these clothes to keep me warm. As I was looking through the clothes this guy pulls up in a car & asks me if I would like to hang-out & that he's got some drugs & alchohol & such, so I decided, what the hell, why not.. I went. He gave me the most speed I had ever had in my life before. I did it for like 2 days straight, then this guy leaves & leaves me in a hotel room with this other guy that was parting with us. We get into a fight & he nearly stabs me with a knife, so I leave & I am going to sleep on the streets.. This is when I was experimenting with the Goatia.. so I end up settling down outside near the back half of a semi-truck. As I lay down I look ahead of me & under a light-post I see a severed human head. It was really scary & I just sat there looking at it wondering where it must have come from. The next thing I know I look in back of me & there is this moster sized demon behind me with the body of what looked like a black bear with no head. Then I look to my left & under the semi is another demon with huge bat like wings. I was scared out of my wits but afraid to move. to my right in some bushes I saw what appeared to be Faeries with wings & such.. I wasn't afriad of them but I was of the demons. I just sat there & I began interacting with the Faeries & they reached out their little hands to me & we touched & ever time I touched their hands I got electric shocks. It was a long night & I ended up going a little out of my mind. I ended up calling the police & having them check me into a hospital. Then another time I was with this girl I met in a psyche ward & we ended up doing some speed together, I began summoning spirits from the Goatia & we both saw a large explosion in the middle of the room & smelled sulfer. I didn't mess with it for about a year after that, then picked it up again when I was living in an RV in Santa Cruz. I kept summoning the spirits then I had this mushroom trip where everything shifted & I became like possessed for like 3 months by a demon. I saw everything as a demon sees it & really was not myself at all. It was hard to get back to normal. I don't know I haven't fully explained everything about what went on & how I met individuals who actually were possessed by diffrent spirits of the Goatia. I didn't really touch the book for about 3 years since the last experience but not I am suddenly getting my interests back in it just because it is such a powerful force. I think I am more stable & willing to work with these subversive spirits a little better now but it's like you can't choose to work with it, it works with you & there is a strong draw to it when the spirits summon you. I would like to hear some other perspectives on your experience. It is certainly nothing to be toyed with & I really find it kind of disturbing at how readily available it is to the public. Anyways, that is all I have to say for now. Thank you.

Patron Metals and the Mercury 'Problem'

If this has been brought up before, I apologize.

So when using the metals of the offices to cast sigils, what do you do for Mercury? It obviously doesn't work well to cast sigils in a liquid.

In the past, having only conjured one president before, we used parad with some success. Have others found alternate means to dealing with the mercury "problem"? Do you combine all the other metals as is sometimes done in other ceremonial works? Parad seemed a good substitute as its still mercury, with just enough silver added to make it solid...

...exactly what /are/ Liberal Sciences, anyway? I'm thinking they're not like true sciences, for example Physics and Chemistry, and more akin to things like psychology, sociology and whatnot, but I've really no idea. Help plz.

On that note, I'm sure this point's come up before, but what the flying Furcas is a "Xenopilus"? I've heard such things like, it's a corruption of 'cynaeophallus', which sounds like some variety of of betentacled being from Lovecraftian erotica, to it's a greek word meaning "alien". This is something of a tall order, but has anyone who's evoked him got an answer?

I recently picked up an amulet at a Ren. Faire that has a Triangle of Soloman on one side, and the sigal and name BELETH on the other side.
I have since learned that this is a demon god.
The guy said this was a symbol for the Gemini star sign. I can find no connection.
If any thing these symbols are for dark magick.
Can anybody shead some light on the meaning of this.
I have worn this since I got it. I feel there is some energy in it, but not quite sure what.

Entities What Do You Think They Are?(from Ceremonial Magic)

This is on a gaziilion tribes and lists now. I thought it would make for good conversation. Sorry for the repeat to some of you that are on any of my lists. I also put it on my mailing list, so sorry to people who may run into it many times and even on my blog. It is on my mind today. We all talk about magic and our beliefs and deities. Do we ever really talk about WHAT THEY ARE? Where the energy is coming from? How this all works? Well, that is what this post is about. Sorry for repeats to many of you, I thought that this was particularly relevant with the Goetia tribe;

I was wondering if anyone has worked in demonology and angelology, if you have had any experiences with these entities at all, other then archetypal images in your mind, and if so, how they came across to you? I mean with myself, for the most part, when having issues with entities, the only way that I have had experiences with them, is either corner of the the eye movement, ALOT Of auditory, not someone having a conversation with me and third eye, VERY RARELY IN MY LIFE. ; )

Once when there were two other people there with me, we were on the top of a plateau, out in the desert. We were doing a Lilith ritual. Calling the four faces of Lilith from the four quarters, rather then the watchtowers or four princes, or angels, or whatever. We asked Lilith for knowledge. We did hear voices off in the distance, in fact we got out of the circle, (which we shouldn't have) and started loading the car with all of our ritual stuff, thinking someone was coming. Here we had these cow skulls and blood everywhere, we had put bloody chicken livers all on the outside of the circle. We were in Central Utah, where there are Mormon farmers and ranchers. We had written out the ritual ourselves so there is none like it, if some of you are perplexed about it.

But when we stood up on the plateau and looked in every direction around us, there was no one, we could see for miles, no dust from even a car. We had heard voices off in the distance, like they were coming and not to far from us. This happened twice, once we heard the voices from the South, the other time from the North.
Then the other night with my growling incident, another auditory moment. I have had a third eye experiences I won't get into. It was frightening until I learned how to control it, but I don't think that I have that capability anymore, because I shut it down because of fear.

How do entities appear to you, if they do at all? What do you see, not see, what do you hear, not hear, or do you believe they manifest physcally at all?

Choronzon IS supposed to be a hallucination. When Crowley was out in the desert and had his infamous show down with Choronzon, his account of the whole thing, was a physical manifestation, he was even having a conversation with the demon. However, to his partner, there was nothing there, there was a conflict in their notes. Maybe Choronzon DOES manifest to the PERSON as a hallucination, which is not physical at all. I mean after all, isn't Choronzon SUPPOSED to be inside of us to start with? Which makes me wonder, if demons altogether, don't manifest as hallucinations. To me they have always been something that exaggerates YOUR OWN WEAKNESSES, such as addictions, as depression. Anything that is self-destructive, envy, guilt. All of these above. I mean the people that I know of that died from working with the Goetia in my own area and with the things that I do, all overdosed on drugs. Some killed themselves. Some are just permanently hospitalized the rest of their lives, although I think one died a violent death, not of his own making, I believe. They were all the magicians in my area, (before I moved back here) that were my age group. In our local area, there aren't as many magicians that are my age, there is a whole generation of them that are dead or hospitalized. There are only a handful left from that time period. Some of the magicians around here that are left, sometimes tribute their fallen brothers in ritual.

That is how demons in my mind always manifest, usually as cronic clinical depression and guilt, but also obsession. I learned to overcome that last one though, after about three years. However, I think in some cases that you are seeing a hallucination, but not like the classic schizophrenic. Does this make sense to anyone else here? Any hardcore magicians on this list, that maybe know what I am talking about?

Just looking for ideas and answers. That psychic attack a couple of weeks ago, got me thinking about what I really think about this, or what may be the cause. As a Psych major, I know that I am lucid and I know that I don't have recurring hallucinations. I am not a schizophrenic and it is not drug flashbacks. I never did LSD. I mean I am sure I would be able to tell.

What do YOU people think about all of this, how do you explain the unexplainable? I have also written a paper, just tapped into the ideas a little bit, of quantum physics, Super String theory, (for different dimensions) the idea of fourth dimension and it being time...I mean for other unexplained phenomenon.

The thing that makes me connect a lot of what we do to Super String Theory is this...that if every particle is made up of vibrations, when we are doing things like vibrating the names of god, Chanting ancient vedic chants that have to be performed a particular way, when shamans sing, and medicine men, when people even sing in church...that all connects us with the Universe. Even Tibetan holymen have vibrating bowls. They chant words of power. I mean maybe people weren't fools after all. Are we connecting to hter beings from other dimensions, there are 10 to 26 in Super String Theory, although some are very small. If you do the math, never been physically proven. However...are we connecting in another place?

That is what my mailing list is about, (was supposed to be) it is mainly Chaos magicians and other innovative magical people that mix modern science and psychology and that sort of thing, with older traditions. That is at least what I do. There are some just straight chaos mages on there. That is why I named it "Illuminated_Dimensions" those are the ideas I was working with at the time and would like to go further with...I wrote a paper for school about it, and studied physics on my own for two months to do it. But being a full time student, working full time and writing my own books and taking care of my kids..really leaves me very little time. But I want to get to know more about physics. That is what I want to do if I ever have the time. Is connect up magic, with physics. As a woman of science, (Anthropology/Psych) and a
Philosopher(my major) I need answers. If anyone is interested in the very VERY basic paper that I wrote and stuffed all this information into ten pages... let me know. I can E-mail it. But you could just read the book by Michio Kaku called, "Hyperspace". That book is marvelous. It answers a lot of my questions.

PS. Mistake:Oh, and Philosophy is my Minor, don't want to toot my own horn, if it isn't true. LOL. I love Phillsophy. Actually, I took so many classes out of the sheer enjoyment of it, that I ended up being one class away from a minor, so I am taking it. Mainly, my favorite field is philosophical linguistics. But classical philosophy is okay too. I am awful at math, so if it hadn't been for my natural gift at understanding very intense philosophical arguments, I wouldn't have been able to comprehend Quantum Physics very well. I went up to the U of U library, the Marriott to do research for my paper and there were just rows and rows of books of mathematical equations about physics. I found that I could totally comprehend the philosophical outlook a lot better. I also like Stephen Hawking and others of his caliber.

I just started reading "The Little Book of Demons" by Ramsey Dukes. I'm interested in how many people see a relationship between Goetia and Dukes' conclusions in his book.

I posted a short blog-entry on my page, but a short version of his reasoning goes like this:

People are social creatures so it makes sense that we would view the world and our issues in anthropomorphic terms.

--Of course this could be construed to presuppose that Goetic entities are not independant of the human psyche.

How many "props" do you need??

For summoning spirits from the Goatia how necciary is it do you think to do everything according to the book, like the Magickal Circle of King Solomon, the Magick Ring, the Vessel of Brass, the Secret Seal and writing out all the symbols in metal?? If you can skip these steps, what do you think the best method of summoning is? I want to call upon the spirit Bune or Bine, does anyone have any suggestions of working with this spirit? I am trying to be cautious because I have made to many mistakes in the past & don't want to mess up in any way this time. Thank you for your advice.

I thought that this included many different topics, which allowed us to maybe have more discussion, since it was more general, then the different tribes that have all of these subjects spread out. This would include many different traditions, sort of a meeting place of the minds, and also an information center for different gatherings going on around the country, classes through correspondence, different informational websites, things of that nature. I think that if it gets going, it will be a fantastic list.

Ceremonial Magic And The Power Of Evocation

What are evryone's thoughts on this? Anyone else read it yet? While I don't agree with all of his take, his arguments for "doing it oldschool" are fairly convincing in terms of framework, IE; the Qabalistic correspondences that most modern magicians are using are not the same as those of the authors of the Grimoires. As a Chaos Magician I take issue with his absolute insistence on not mixing systems, as clearly Medieval Grimoires were a synthesis of different systems - Evocation didn't spring up fully formed all by itself. However, I have to admit that I've never achieved the level of Evocation To Physical Manifestation as he puts it myself in the way that he describes.

Much like the Acella-Melin working that those who go for the HGA do, I would assume that most, if not virtually ALL magicians who have performed (or attempted) classical Evocation have done so in a modified manner. I know I found many problems inherent with working the Grimoires early on and thus concentrated on Sorcery primarily; sucessfully, but what I'd like to ask is, A) has anyone else had a chance to read this book yet and B) has anyone done a 1 to 1 analysis of a syncretic vs. orthodox classical Evocation?

If so what were the results?

It's a compendium of many of his smaller chapbooks put into a highly workable system.. you can read some reviews of his smaller works at http://www.dagonproductions.com

But back to the point..

There is an interesting chapter on Goetia from a LHP stand point.. I will let you know what results I possibly attain..

hello everyone:
i'm new to this tribe. i joined because i wish to learn more about the topic. i've read a couple of books on evoking spirits but wish to learn and hear from people with actual experience.

i do have one main question and that is, is it possible to work with the energies of "whichever spirit " without evoking them. my living conditions do not allow me to do such elaborate rituals.

has anyone ever made or worked with a servitor. i came across this term on another tribe. what did you do and what were you're experiences like.

Books and educational material on Summoning.

Hello all.
I just joined this tribe. I have a library on transedental magic, that begins in Egypt. Books from India and some printed privately dating back to the 1800's.
One book in particular has 100's of interesting seals in it.

I was wondering if any of you could discuss the results of your summoning experiences.
And does the old addage apply here? "Be careful for what you ask for because there is always a price to pay"?
I've learned this from experience have any of you?

classical vs. modern goetia

So does the majority of people here do the actual full classical style summonings as listed in the Goetia? With the medallions, sigils, circle, triangle of evocation, etc?

I know some whom have had great success just using crowley's bornless ritual and Crowley seems to have just used the first two enochian calls.

As an initiate in the Temple of Set I have a hard time calling up a demon in the name of IHVH. I tend to view the enities as friends to be respected rather than demons to be feared. At the same time there is something pretty beautiful about using the full regalia.
